The not shining side of the Coin

I recently read a heart breaking story from a little Russian girl who “worked herself to death” as a model in Shanghai. But what is behind in this inconceivable story? What might be the truth? Actually it is an average situation with models in China but the luck left this poor girl and she didn’t have a caring agency behind her which is quite rare in the industry. (Second part is Hungarian)

 

When you decide you want to become a model or somebody discover you in a very young age you don’t know you are going to sell your soul to the devil. Ok, it was exaggeration but the sparkling fashion word will slowly destroy you if you can’t say no and you aren’t experienced enough to handle the extremely high level of stress.

In The Siberian Times article you can read half information which mention that usually Chinese agencies are giving contracts to girls who came from Siberia. Modelling agencies recruiting girls from all over the word and giving contracts to models who might be appropriate for the season. They can came from Canada, Brazil or Siberia, basically from anywhere. It doesn’t really matter for a big and great agency. They care about only one thing! The money what they make! The agency who recruited this girl is the biggest and the best in Shanghai. We call them ‘model factory’ between ourselves, they bring many models and they aren’t give any proper help for the very young ones. We are talking about a 14-year-old girl who went to a 24million population city by herself probably without knowing English on intermediate level. She was in her teenage years when she should spend more time with her contemporaries but she still need a parent or at least a supervisor who should supervision her working hours, meals, sleeping hours etc. Even if you are a normal teenager and you live with your family in this age the depression, solitude and bashfulness can confuse you, you don’t understand what is going on with you. Now add the fashion industry next to the teenage years. All this can cause several sickness for example eating disorder and can break your career or the industry will take again a beautiful soul and the price can be your life.

The article mention the Russian law stated underage models can’t work more than three hours in a WEEK. Well, I would like to see a modelling contract which doesn’t violent this statute. Because if it is true China must send home 90% of the Russian models immediately! Lot of underage Russian models work there and have many jobs which means they can work sometimes 16 hours per day. They also said the causes of the girl’s death are believed to be chronic meningitis and exhaustion. A 14-year-old girl cannot be considered as adult neither physically nor mentally and probably her body couldn’t handle this much working hours and stress. Even if she didn’t work that much she was on the way all day long to tons of castings. From my personal experiences I can tell you we sleep less than we should even if we don’t go to have some fun. When you land with an airplane in China the agency is cute enough to pick you up there and immediately take you to millions of castings which are really tiring. You might have a job on your second day and maybe it is in another city so you need to take a train or fly somewhere but you couldn’t sleep a lot because of jet leg and your train is going to departure at 4 a.m. from the other side of the city and the clients ask you the question when you are jumping in your high heels for the tenth hour in 10 degree: Why do you look tired? Well…I don’t know maybe I am not a robot just a human. And after all they report you to your agency and say you are hysterical and you don’t want to work.

We can also read she didn’t have medical insurance despite being in China on her three months contract. I don’t know who is responsible for this, but it is a vast mistake. If the family can’t afford it the Mother agency should do this! Some of the people in the comment section blame this girl because she didn’t go to a hospital in time and the doctors would save her life and meningitis wouldn’t take it away. Here is an average conversation what every model experience in China, I hope you can be closer to the truth:
Model: I feel a little bit sick. I should see a doctor.
Booker: Ohh, ok ok…but first we go to this casting and this casting and after if we finished                  we go. (With Chinese accent)
M.: ok, but please don’t forget
B: Oh well we will finish very late and we can’t go to the hospital, maybe tomorrow  you’ll feel better. JUST DRINK MORE WATER! (Of course the girl won’t be better…)
M: I need to see a doctor today, I have a fever!
B: Oh, ok but you know you have this job whit this reeeeaaaaaally really important client, we just can’t lose it. Can you go?
M: Yes, but after…hospital.
B: I’m sorry honey but you finished late and it’s Friday. So sorry I’ll be out of the city so we will go on Monday if you still feel sick…
When I was in Beijing I had pneumonia and they took me to a hospital when my fever didn’t go away in five days. Earlier if I mentioned I need some medicine they were just laughing and said drink more water and go to castings. At this time I was 19 years old and I was taken to a hospital when I asked it more vigorously and my MA called them.

4-5 days can be enough to a chronic meningitis. Many times the agencies think we just don’t want to work or we have hangover and it is not serious and we shouldn’t be this spoilt. But what could cause her meningitis? If it was the bacterial type she could get the infection from her model apartment. In the industry everyone knows the model apartments are disgusting and freaking dirty. Agencies always employ a cleaning lady who actually doesn’t do anything just wash some dish and change the garbage bag. Oh sometimes they “mop” the floor. Some of us clean the flat but this doesn’t help on the real problem which is usually the air conditioner what we use for heating on winter. It is usually full of mould inside and outside. We clean it as much as we can because they don’t do it for us, but we aren’t experts and we don’t know how to clean it properly.  Models are making millions to the agencies so we should not ask to have a clean apartment.

But let’s be honest! Things are not black and white, there is lot of great thing in modelling. But I wanted to show this job is not a fairy tale if you didn’t born in a famous family. We work hard in high heels for 6-16 hour long a day sometimes in bad conditions which are inhuman and we don’t get proper food or enough sleep or enough rest but believe me, it is worth it if you learn to adapt and fight for your rights. I spent a whole year in Shanghai, I was 19-year-old when I took my first steps in this decent country which I truly love and I can’t be enough grateful for those things I got there for example amazing friendships, memorable hikes, parties etc. It can be said I got a second family. Fortunately I had a caring Mother Agency and I didn’t meet with the horrible conditions as much as other models.

But it is not appropriate workplace for a 14-year-old child!

When will the industry learn they can’t use children for work and throw it away if they are “broken”? How many young life has to be ruined? How many dreams have to break? How many physically and mettally sick girl will this industry create? Who will take care of them? I try to show the bad side of this word which doesn’t necessary need contain drugs and I doubt you still can’t imagine the working conditions in China. My voice is not loud enough. I hope someday this will change but I can imagine this agency won’t have any consequences and it is unacceptable.

Az elmúlt napokban felbukkant egy szívszorítóan szomorú cikk egy 14 éves lányról, aki az író szerint Sanghajban halálra dolgozta magát. De mi történhetett valójában? Mi lehet a valóság? A szituáció, amiről a cikk írója beszél a valóságban elég átlagos történet csak sajnos ez a szerencsétlen lány nem volt elég erős és nem állt a háta mögött egy törődő anyaügynökség.

The Siberian Times cikkében fél információkat közölnek, melyben említik, hogy a kínai ügynökségek többnyire Szibériából gyűjtenek modelleket. Természetesen az egész világról kerülnek hozzájuk modell tömegek. Egy jó és nagy ügynökségnek nem számít milyen országból kell repülnie a modellnek, csak az, hogy megfelelő legyen a szezonnak. Az egyetlen dolog, ami igazán fontos a számukra pedig az, hogy mennyi hasznot képes csinálni a modell. A legjobb és legnagyobb sanghaji ügynökség kötött 3 hónapos szerződést a lánnyal. Ahhoz, hogy helyesen tudjuk látni a helyzetet tudnunk kell, hogy ő 14 éves létére egy 24 millió fős városba érkezett, felnőtt kísérő nélkül, a tinédzserkor kellős közepén. Amikor is a kortársakkal való interakciók egyre fontosabbá válnak mindamellett, hogy szükséges a szülői kontroll. Ekkor meg kell küzdenünk a depresszióval, magánnyal és szégyenlősséggel, ha ezekhez a már magában súlyos lelki erőt igénylő változásokhoz hozzáadjuk a divatvilág adta nehézségeket, akkor nem csoda, hogy sérüléseket fog okozni a személyiségfejlődésben. Könnyen kialakulnak étkezési zavarhoz köthető betegségek, amelyek elkerülhetőek lennének.

A cikk szerint a halál oka a végkimerülés és a súlyos agyhártyagyulladás. De mi okozta ezt a  kimerültségi szintet? Az orosz törvények szerint egy kiskorú nem dolgozhat többet, mint három órát egy héten. Szeretnék olyan modell szerződést látni, ahol nem sértik meg ezt a törvényt, ugyanis az ennyire fiatal lányok a babaarcuknak köszönhetően általában rengeteget dolgoznak, néha 16 órát egy nap. Egy 14 éves fejlődő szervezet még nem tekinthető felnőttnek sem fizikailag sem mentálisan, még ha nem is dolgozott ilyen sokat, akkor is egész nap castingokra járt, ami kifejezetten fárasztó. A személyes tapasztalataim alapján el tudom képzelni, hogy nem bírta ezt fizikálisan, hiszen amikor egy hosszú repülőút után végre megérkezel, az ügynökség felvesz téged és azonnal indultok milliónyi castingra, amelyek estig tartanak. Majd előfordulhat, hogy másnap már van munkád, esetleg egy másik városba, tehát valamilyen járművel el kell jutni oda, de egész éjjel nem tudtál aludni a jet lag miatt, a vonat hajnali 4-kor indul, majd néhány óra út után azonnal kezdődhet a munka. Esetleg 10 óra magas sarkúban ugrálás után amelyet egész nap 10 °C-ban hajtottál végre a kliens megkérdezi, hogy ugyan már te miért is nézel ki fáradtnak. Mire a válasz a lehető legilledelmesebben annyi, hogy mert ember vagyok és nem robot. Természetesen ezt jelentik az ügynökségnek és közlik, hogy ez a modell egy hisztérika és lusta is dolgozni.

Még azt is említik, hogy a lány nem rendelkezett betegbiztosítással arra a három hónapos periódusra amit Kínában töltött. És vádolják, hogy az ő hibája az egész és nem ment el időben orvoshoz. Nos, miden emberrel megesik, hogy néha lebetegszik. Ha casting van, akkor casting van, ha munka van akkor munka van és az nem lesz elhalasztva, mert van egy kis láz. Napok telnek el, amíg orvosi ellátást kap a modell, ha egyáltalán kap, hiába kérleli. Amikor Pekingben töltöttem 3 hónapot – betegbiztosítással- tüdőgyulladásom lett. 19 éves voltam és elég hangsúlyosan kérleltem, hogy vigyenek el orvoshoz, de valami miatt, mindig el kellett halasztani, még nevettek is, hogy semmi bajom sincs, csak igyak több vizet és jó lesz. Az ötödik nap, amikor erélyesebben szóltam, hogy a lázam nem megy le és az anyaügynökségem is telefonált nekik, akkor végre megkaptam a kellő ellátást. Nem figyelnek a saját egészségükre, a modellekére miért fordítanának energiát?

4-5 nap elegendő egy krónikusabb agyhártyagyulladásnak. Legtöbbször az ügynökségek azt hiszik, hogy csak nem akarunk dolgozni, vagy másnaposak vagyunk vagy ez csak hiszti. De mi okozhatta ezt a súlyos kimenetelű betegséget, amely a központi idegrendszert megbetegíti? Többféle baktérium is ludas lehet. Nem kell messze menni, ahhoz, hogy találjunk valamit. A divatiparban dolgozók nagyon jól tudják, hogy mennyire visszataszítóan igénytelen és koszos egy modell apartman. Az ügynökségek alkalmaznak takarítónőket, akik azonban nem szeretik a dolgukat végezni. Elmosnak néhány edényt, kiürítik a szemetest és néha feltörlik a padlót mindenféle fertőtlenítőszer nélkül. Nos, néhányan takarítjuk az apartmant, de a legfőbb kórokozó forrást elfelejtik, a légkondicionálót. Amely a legtöbb lakásban kívülről és belülről is elemészti a penész, mi ezt is ki szoktuk takarítani, de miután a modellek nem légkondikat szerelő szakemberek, ezért nem megfelelően és nem a leghatékonyabban csináljuk. Miután az ügynökségek milliókat kaszálnak a fiúkon, lányokon elvárható volna, hogy tiszta lakást biztosítsanak.

Legyünk őszinték! A dolgok sose feketék vagy fehérek. A lényeg, hogy ez a világ nem egy tündérmese, ha nem egy híres családba születtél. A modell munka igenis kihívás és kemény, nem életeket mentünk ez igaz. Sokszor 6-16 órát állunk a magas sarkúba néha embertelen körülmények között, hidegben. Összesen 1 évet töltöttem Shanghaiban és hálás vagyok érte, az élményekért, az emberekért akiket megismertem és azért, hogy mindig olyan ügynökséghez kerültem, ahol törődtek velem. De ez a munka, abban a városban nem egy 14 éves gyereknek való!

Mikor fogja végre megtanulni a divatvilág, hogy gyerekeket ne dolgoztassanak? Mennyi életnek kell még tönkre mennie? Hány beteg modellre van még szükség? Ki gondoskodik a fiatalokról? Meg akartam mutatni a rossz oldalát ennek a világnak, amit nem feltétlenül kell drogokhoz kötni, de úgy gondolom ezek után még mindig nem elég teljes a kép. Az én hangom nem elég hangos, remélem, ez egy nap változik majd. Sajnos a legszomorúbb az, hogy az ügynökség mindenféle következmény nélkül meg fogja úszni és mindenki más is.
